London based consumer technology brand, Nothing announced the upcoming launch of its first AI-native product next month. Revealing the upcoming launch in a new article titled ‘Toolmakers', Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, describes the product as a tool built with the personality and care that have come to define Nothing products. It will have no new screen and, as Carl puts it, ‘it couldn't have been an app'.
In the article, Carl shares his perspective on where the next phase of AI innovation will come from, challenging the industry's pursuit of the next big AI consumer device. He argues that the real opportunity lies in building genuinely useful tools that help people get things done, with productivity-led innovation laying the foundation for AI's wider adoption.
Drawing parallels with the evolution of personal computers and mobile phones, Carl believes that new technologies first prove their value through practical applications before becoming indispensable parts of everyday life. He also highlights the growing ‘context gap' in AI, arguing that while the intelligence is already here, AI still lacks an understanding of people's everyday lives, conversations and experiences.
Reflecting on where the industry is headed, Carl Pei writes, ‘Product-market fit for AI will come in productivity first, in the tools people rely on to get real things done, and that’s where the real opportunity is today. When the iPhone of AI does arrive in a few years, it will be built on that work. It might be a form factor nobody has imagined yet, or three of today's devices collapsing into one.'
‘Today, you work with your AI. Tomorrow, it works for you. Close the context gap, and work itself gets rewritten: how people work together, how organizations work with people, and how people work with agents. Tools become proactive, taking care of the mundane so people can spend their time on what's creative and strategic.'
Carl also emphasises the importance of design in shaping the next generation of productivity tools, arguing that functionality and aesthetics should go hand in hand. At Nothing, this philosophy is reflected in its approach to building products end to end, with hardware and software capabilities under one roof, a distinctive design language and an established ecosystem of devices.
